MONIN Amaretto syrup is based on the traditional Italian sweet, almond-flavoured liqueur. Distinguished by the distinct flavour of the'mandoria-amara' or bitter almond, the name Amaretto translates as 'a little bitter' in Italian.
It is said to have originated during the Italian Renaissance, when Bernardino Luini, a pupil of Leonardo Da Vinci, was commissioned to paint a fresco of the Madonna of the Miracles in Saronno in 1525. He drew inspiration for his Madonna from a lovely local innkeeper. She steeped apricot kernels in brandy and presented the resulting amber liquid to Luini as a token of her gratitude and affection.
Today, Amaretto is typically made with apricot pits but may also include almonds, additional spices, and flavourings.
MONIN Amaretto captures the bittersweet flavour of this popular liqueur and can be used to make a sumptuous Tiramisu Cappuccino and a variety of other delectable Italian desserts and after-dinner drinks.
